Terms of use

Using this site means accepting the terms below. They are short because the site does little: it runs arithmetic in your browser and publishes written guides.

Acceptable use

Use the calculators and read the guides, for personal or commercial work, without asking. Link to any page freely, including a calculator with values already filled in from its address.

Please do not:

  • Attempt to disrupt the site or the service that hosts it, including by automated request volume that a person could not generate.
  • Republish the written guides wholesale as your own. Quoting with attribution and a link is fine.
  • Present a result from this site as a measurement, a test, or professional advice. It is arithmetic on the numbers you entered.
  • Use the site in a way that misrepresents its output, its authorship, or its independence.

There are no accounts, so there is nothing to suspend; these are limits on use, not conditions of access.

Accuracy of results

These calculators use the formulas published on each tool page. Results are arithmetic based on the values you enter and assume the bitrate you supply is the average bitrate actually achieved. Real encodes, cards, and connections vary. Check important deliveries against your own equipment.

That statement is not there to excuse an incorrect formula. Every formula is published on the methodology page and on the tool that uses it, and each is tested against fixed worked examples. If a formula is wrong, that is a defect and it will be corrected; the statement above is about the difference between arithmetic and the physical world, not about the arithmetic being approximate.

No warranty

The site and everything on it are provided as they are, without warranty of any kind, express or implied — including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. No promise is made that the site will be available, that a result will suit your situation, or that a guide reflects the current requirements of any platform or product mentioned in it.

Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, the publisher is not liable for any loss arising from use of this site — including a shoot that ran out of card space, an export that did not fit a delivery limit, or a transfer that missed a deadline. Decisions with real consequences should be checked against your own equipment before you rely on them.

Nothing here limits a liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Content and ownership

The text, calculators, and visual design of this site are original work. No branding, illustration, or page layout is copied from another product. Product, platform, and format names that appear in the guides belong to their respective owners and are used only to describe what a number refers to; their appearance implies no affiliation with or endorsement by anyone.

The site makes no claim of hands-on testing, personal experience, or professional credentials, and none should be read into it. Where a guide states a fact about a platform or a format, it cites the source it came from.

Availability

The site is static files served by a host. It may be unavailable, moved, or withdrawn at any time, without notice. Nothing is stored on your behalf that could be lost when that happens: everything you enter stays in your browser.

Changes to these terms

These terms may change. The current version is version 1, shown at the top of this page, and the version in force is the one published here when you use the site.

Terms of use normally name the party publishing them and an address for notices. No verified contact address exists for this site yet, and this project does not publish an address or an identity it cannot stand behind, nor a placeholder made to look real.
